Traditional food of Mallorca

Like any popular tourist destination, Mallorca offers food from all corners of the world to its visitors. If you like your home comforts and traditional British food, you’ll have no trouble finding it, along with classic German, Italian, Chinese and Indian food. However, if you fancy being a bit more adventurous, why not try sampling some of Mallorca’s own traditional food.

Many of Mallorca’s main dishes are based around pork, seafood, vegetables, olive oil and garlic – and lots of it. The main ingredients of the local fare are based around what the locals can easily get their hands on and turn into delicious meals.

If you go out for a meal in Mallorca, it is almost guaranteed that it will start with a dish of bread and olives. Olives were first introduced into Mallorca by the Romans, and have remained incredibly popular ever since. They are frequently served with pa amb oil (bread and oil), and make a great starter to any Mallorcan meal.

A great Spanish tradition is paella, with Mallorca having its own version called arros brat (dirty rice). This meal consists of saffron rice cooked with chicken, pork and vegetables. This dish is excellent if you already like paella, because at least you can pick something off the menu that you know you will enjoy.

As pork features heavily in a lot of Mallorcan cooking, it may be a good idea to sample some of delicious sausages Mallorca has on offer. Some of most famous are sobrasada (a pork salami-style sausage with red chili peppers added), botifarro (cured pork with blood) and the famous Spanish chorizo. They may be a little different to the bangers you eat at home with mash, but the people of Mallorca definitely know how to make a sausage, so trying some is definitely recommended.

To finish of your meal perfectly, you may want something to satisfy your sweet tooth. While Mallorca isn’t as big on sweet meals as it is on savory, you should still be able to find something to keep you satisfied. Dishes like helado (ice cream), flan (crème caramel) and gato de almendras (almond cake with toasted almond ice cream) are all delicious and sweet, and will round your meal off perfectly.

If you want to explore Mallorca a little deeper, it is definitely a good idea to try some of the local dishes. As you will be able to eat traditional British food whenever you like when you are at home, why not branch out and try something a little different when you are on holidays.
