Glasgow guide

Glasgow is a Scottish city now counting 700 000 inhabitants. It’s the third most visited city in Great Britain, after London and Edinburgh. It's an important industrial city with developed metallurgy, machinery and food industry. An old city with rich history, it has a huge cultural heritage.

The saint patron of the city is Saint Mungo. In the middle of VI century his master died and Mungo put his body in cart with two bulls. They brought him to the banks of Clyde River. Mungo named it The Dear Green Place and buried his master there. The church, Mungo built, was destroyed during the wars after his death. In XII Gothic cathedral was raised on this site and the city was founded. In Middle Ages Glasgow was a small fishing village. In 1451 the University was opened here. Glasgow was an important battlefield. Bishop’s Castle now houses a Royal Hospital. In 1300 William Wallas ("Brave Heart") with his 300 soldiers resisted here the English army with 1000 knights. Two centuries later Bishop’s Castle again became a battlefield when Maria Stuart struggle for the Scottish crown.

During Industrial Revolution Glasgow has become one of the main British cities. Now the oldest house of the city is Lord Provand’s house built 500 years ago.

In 1990-s Glasgow was acclaimed as a "City of European culture". Nowadays Glasgow is a city looking forward to the future. The burst of the interest to art is accompanied with the fast development of the entertainment business.

Glasgow is one of the most lively and cosmopolitan cities in Europe. It attracts tourist with its collection of painting, good shopping and the brightest nightlife in Scotland.

Among Glasgow attractions are Burrell Collection, Cathdral, The Saint Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art and old commercial districts. All in all there are 20 museums in Glasgow. The most of them offer free entry.

Among other must-sees are the architectural masterpieces of Art Nouveau representative – Charles Macintosh, such as Lighthouse and Art School.

To the national treasures of Glasgow can be related International Congress Center, Concert Hall, Scientific center and Sport Arena. Glasgow is a home to two most successful Scottish football clubs – Celtic and Glasgow Rangers.
Glasgow has a typical Scottish weather – very changeable. It could be wet and cloudy in the morning and sunny and warm during the day.
