Hamburg is the second biggest and one of the most visited cities in Germany. Its port is considered to be one of the busiest in Europe. The city is unique in many aspects. Hamburg lies on the banks of Elba River and the there are more bridges than even in Venice! It’s also the city with the highest density of millionaires in the whole Germany.
The story of Hamburg began in IX century when Christian missioners settled here. In the Middle Ages it was one of Hanse cities and later became “free city” along with Bremen and Lubeck. During World War II the significant part of buildings in the city was destroyed, but now almost nothing reminds of these gloomy times for the country and the city – the city looks contemporary, progressive and successful.
The centre of the city was seriously damaged by the fire of 1842. There almost impossible to find a house, structure, a monument older than a century, but numerous canals, shops and lively atmosphere make this place worth visiting.
Unfortunately, the shops close early and in the evening, the centre of live moves to other districts – San Pauli and Eppendorf.
The grin of the fortune - San Pauli, known for the raging of criminality and flourishing of sex industry was named in the honor of the church of Saint Paulis. Now it is a popular place for night entertainments – only here bars are open 24 hours a day. Reeperbahn street is one of the symbols of Hamburg and one of the reasons it was called “Sin City”. In German Reeperbahn is also called "die sündige Meile", which means “sin mile”.
Eppendorf is a new and chic district around Isestrasse, the most beautiful and expensive street in the city. The area is full of luxurious restaurants and boutiques.
However the city can offer much more than night entertainments, shopping and dining. One of the most outstanding sites in Hamburg is Speicherstadt – the city of warehouses. Huge warehouses of red brick built in 1895-1910 create an unusual environment especially when enlighten at night.
Like many European cities Hamburg has Rathausmarkt - Town Council Square. Here the city administration is located. Among other attractions Hauptkirche St Katharinen of XV century, Nikolaikirche of XIX century, Hamburger Kunshalle and Deichtorhallen.
Hamburg also can boast a beautiful nature. It’s the greenest city in Europe and Alster Lake is a perfect place for walks. There are also a lot of parks and gardens.
